Columbus Board of Education Awards High School Diploma To Veteran
Feb. 5, 2020 -- At the Columbus Board of Education's regular business meeting on February 4, the board enacted two important resolutions: awarding a high school diploma to a veteran, as well as formal recognition of National School Counseling Week.
Alvin Meek, a veteran, received his diploma from board president Jennifer Adair during a ceremony at the beginning of the meeting. The Ohio Revised Code allows school districts to grant diplomas to community members who are veterans of World War II, the Korean Conflict, or the Vietnam Conflict, provided that they are residents of the state or previously enrolled in any high school in the state and meet certain criteria.
Since many of these veterans left high school in order to serve the country, the board wishes to recognize their efforts by awarding them a high school diploma.
Additionally, the board formally recognized February 3-7, 2020 as National School Counseling Week. Employed to help students reach full potential, school counselors are actively committed to helping students explore their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents as these traits relate to career awareness and development, enabling them to be ready for the challenges of the 21st century.
They also help parents focus on ways to further the educational, personal, and social growth of their children, as well as work with teachers and other educators.
They seek to identify and utilize community resources that can enhance and complement comprehensive school counseling programs and help students become productive members of society.
Comprehensive school counseling programs are integral parts of the educational process and CCS wishes to thank all of its counselors for their hard work and service.
The board also urges all Columbus residents to reflect on the outstanding work of our counselors and to express their gratitude to them for the critical role they perform for our students and families each and every day.
