Dear CCS Community,
Welcome back, CCS! I hope each of you had the opportunity to fully enjoy the well-deserved Wellness Week. Whether it involved catching up on some much-needed rest, spending quality time with loved ones, or simply savoring moments of uninterrupted "me time." It brings me great joy to welcome back our dedicated CCS staff and students.
During the November 28 board meeting, we analyzed student performance outcomes. Adopted by the Board, this analysis guided the revision of our board goals to describe the benchmarks to be achieved and targets to better align with our commitment to continuous educational improvement.
One of the significant updates involves a renewed emphasis on mathematics proficiency. We recognize the critical role of mathematics in preparing our students for high school and beyond. Our analysis revealed a need for dedicated efforts to strengthen mathematics proficiency, particularly in seventh grade.
To address this, we're introducing a math goal with the objective of steadily increasing the percentage of seventh-grade students proficient in mathematics on the Ohio State Test. Starting from 14.7% in the 2022-2023 school year, we aim to reach 23.45% proficiency by June 2028, reflecting an average expected annual gain of 1.75 percentage points. This ambitious goal aligns with our commitment to continuous improvement and better equips our students for success in high school.
Our dedication to literacy remains unwavering, recognizing its foundational impact on students' lives. Literacy promotes lifelong learning, enhances communication skills, and fosters critical thinking. Investments in professional development for elementary teachers aligned with the science of reading and utilizing ESSER funds for LTRS training are crucial to our literacy-focused efforts. Additionally, expanding pre-K programs at six sites and our advocacy for universal pre-K will set the stage for student success in literacy. Aligning with our Pathway Express initiative, we strive to ignite a passion for those learning experiences in art and literacy exploration.
In our commitment to supporting students' transitions, we are excited to announce the Transition Fair on December 9 at East High School. This event, designed to offer invaluable resources and guidance, will occur from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Our goal is to empower students as they navigate educational and career pathways beyond high school. I encourage all families to attend as the fair seeks to help parents create a pathway for life-long student success. Families interested in attending the Transition Fair can register at bit.ly/CCSTransitionFair.
These initiatives reflect our dedication to addressing the diverse needs of our student population and fostering an environment conducive to every student's success. We remain steadfast in our commitment to student success.
Thank you for your continued support and collaboration. Together, we are creating a legacy of empowerment, growth, and success for all CCS students.
Sincerely,
Dr. Angela Chapman Superintendent/CEO, Columbus City Schools

December Edition
Winter Brings Slippery Rain, Snow, and Ice
Reminder to keep an appropriate distance between you and the car in front of you so you have time to stop if necessary. Stopping behind another vehicle at a stop sign or signal light: the driver should always stop far enough behind the other vehicle to see its rear wheels touching the ground.
Safety Tips
Here are some safety tips for you and your students to remember:
1. Encourage your children to wear bright, contrasting colors so drivers will more easily see them.
2. Warn children that if they drop something getting on and off the bus, they should tell the driver and follow the driver’s instructions.
If you have a Transportation question/issue, please call our Customer Service number at 614.365.5074, option 1 (option 2 between 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. only).
