The Ohio School Counselor Association (OSCA) has recognized four schools within the Columbus City Schools District for their outstanding counseling programs. Staff at North Linden Elementary, Indian Springs Elementary, Columbus Online Academy, and East High School each received an Ohio School Counselor Accountability Report (OSCAR) awarded during the All Ohio Counselors Conference in Columbus.

“This recognition affirms that we are on the right track in supporting our students both academically as well as socially and emotionally,” East High School Principal, Dr. Kelvin Watson. “Our counseling team plays a crucial role in providing our students with the guidance, resources, and emotional support they need to thrive. This achievement serves as a reminder that the work we do is making a tangible impact on students’ lives, helping them navigate the challenges of high school and preparing them for the future, whether that’s college, career, or other pathways.”

The OSCAR award highlights schools that demonstrate excellence in their counseling programs, focusing on student development and achievement. This recognition underscores school counselors' vital role in fostering academic success, career readiness, and social-emotional development among students.

“When a school is committed to empowering students to speak up, make choices, and take an active role in their learning and community, it creates a more inclusive and supportive environment,” said North Linden Elementary Principal Aundray Brooks. “It not only builds students' confidence but also equips them with skills to navigate challenges, voice their opinions, and engage meaningfully with others.”

Awarded Schools:

  • Adriane Swetland, formerly at North Linden Elementary School

  • Ashley Kay, Indian Springs Elementary School

  • Katie Eisley, Columbus Online Academy

  • Erica Grimes, East High School

  • Carrie Fredrick, East High School

  • Erica April Posey, East High School

“[East High School] is deeply honored to receive recognition from the Ohio School Counselor Association for the exceptional work of our counseling staff,” said Dr. Watson.“This acknowledgment not only highlights the dedication of our counselors but also reflects the collective commitment of our entire East High School community to student success and advocacy.”

School counselors are essential in guiding students through academic challenges, personal issues, and future planning. They provide support in developing study skills, managing time effectively, and setting realistic goals.

Counselors also assist students in navigating social dynamics and coping with personal challenges, contributing to a positive school environment. By addressing these areas, counselors help remove barriers to learning and promote overall student well-being.
