Teacher Appreciation Week: First Year Down, A Lifetime to Go: Davis Dreams Big, Achieves More for Her Classroom
May 06, 2025 — At East Linden Elementary School, a bright smile and a warm heart greet students each morning in one special kindergarten classroom. That smile belongs to Alethea Davis, a first-year teacher whose journey to the classroom has been anything but ordinary, and whose impact in just one school year has been extraordinary.
Mrs. Davis, who officially earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Central State University in May 2024, graduating magna cum laude, is wrapping up her first year as a licensed full-time teacher.
But her relationship with Columbus City Schools (CCS) began well before her name was printed on a diploma.
From substitute teacher to instructional assistant, Davis steadily built the foundation that would prepare her for this moment. Each step along the way taught her flexibility, patience, and the true value of relationships within a school community.
Now, as a kindergarten teacher at East Linden, she’s exactly where she is meant to be—shaping young minds one smile, storytime, and lesson at a time.
“It has truly been a blessing,” she says of her first official year. “I’ve been fortunate to work with an incredible group of students who are bright, curious, and eager to learn. Watching their growth—both academically and socially—has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey so far.”
Her classroom isn’t just a space to learn ABCs and 123s. It’s a comforting, nurturing environment where students are celebrated for who they are. Davis is intentional in cultivating a culture of kindness, where each child feels they truly belong.
“I want them to know that we are a family here—supporting each other, being kind, and working together to make our classroom a safe and welcoming space for everyone,” she explains. “I encourage my students to take ownership of our classroom culture, understanding that we all play an important role in making it a positive, nurturing place to learn and grow.”
So what’s it like being a student in Mrs. Davis’ class?
“It feels so good,” said kindergartener Chloé Bufford. “She’s nice.”
When classmate Gael Claros Palma was asked what he had to say about his teacher, just three words came to mind.
“I love you!” Gael Claros Palma exclaimed.
“He says that all the time,” Davis said with a smile.
The East Linden community has embraced Davis with the same warmth she brings to her classroom. Under the leadership of Principal Cheryl Jones, whom Davis describes as “encouraging and inspiring,” she’s found a home surrounded by colleagues who lift one another up.
“Mrs. Davis has been a tremendous asset to East Linden, consistently going above and beyond to support both our students and staff,” East Linden Principal Cheryl Jones said. “Her dedication, positive attitude, and willingness to step in wherever needed have made a lasting impact on our school community.”
The praise didn’t stop there.
“Her fun-loving spirit, warmth, and deep care for our students create a joyful and welcoming environment wherever she goes,” Principal Jones added. “She goes above and beyond for every child, whether offering a listening ear, a word of encouragement, or a playful moment that brightens a student's day. Her dedication and love for kids shine through in everything she does, making her a truly special part of our school family.”
Support for Davis also flows in from other corners of her life, from her beloved former colleagues at Duxberry Park Arts Impact Elementary School, to her family—her husband, her children, her mom and siblings—who anchor and inspire her every day.
Whether she’s cheering her kids on at school events, going shopping with her mom, or taking road trips to visit her siblings in St. Louis and North Carolina, Davis finds balance and joy in time spent with loved ones.
Even with her first year nearly behind her, Davis is already looking toward the future.
“Moving forward in my teaching career, I hope to become more actively involved in my school community by contributing to school-wide initiatives, supporting colleagues, and building stronger connections with families,” Davis said.
For now, she remains joyfully rooted in the world of kindergarten—where circle time songs and tiny victories are part of the daily magic. And for those dreaming of their own journey into education, Davis offers heartfelt encouragement.
“Teaching is incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with challenges, so stay patient, stay flexible, and never stop learning,” Davis said. “Most importantly, believe in your impact. Even on the tough days, you are making a difference in someone’s life. Every child deserves a caring, dedicated educator, and if you’re passionate about helping others grow, you’re already on the right path.”
With passion, perseverance, and a heart full of love for her students, Alethea Davis is proof that the first chapter of a teaching career can be filled with inspiration, growth, and grace.
If her first year “officially” teaching is any indication, this is only the beginning of something truly special.
