Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1974

  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

    No otherwise qualified individual with a disability. . . shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. . . .”

    29 USC § 794

    Section 504:

    • Provides protection against discrimination for individuals with disabilities, including students in schools.
    • Section 504 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability from all school programs and activities in both public and private schools receiving direct or indirect federal funding.
    • Section 504 is designed to provide equal access and fairness in general education to students with disabilities, thereby leveling the playing field for them through what is known as a Section 504 Accommodation Plan.

    Each school building in the District has 504 Plan Coordinator. If you are interested in requesting an evaluation for your student, please contact the 504 Plan Coordinator at your Student’s school building.
