Columbus City Schools Brothers Excel at Junior Gold National Championships Over Summer Break
August 2, 2024 — Throughout summer, students across the District delve into their hobbies, make memories with family, and achieve significant milestones in life. This summer, Elliott Gordon of Whetstone High School and Miles Gordon of Dominion Middle School showcased their talent in bowling in a series of competitions and dazzled at the Junior Gold National Championships, one of the nation's most prestigious youth bowling tournaments.
"Elliot has been a competitive bowler since he was about nine years old and Miles since he was seven," said his mother, Quenetta Gordon. We travel the country to participate in bowling tournaments. They work and practice all year in preparation for junior gold."
The week-long Detroit, Michigan tournament, featured over 3,100 athletes across six divisions, with more than 600 boys vying for the U15 Boys title. Elliott led the pack after the first four days of competition, while Miles impressively secured the second spot. This sibling duo made history as the first brothers to finish the qualifying round as the top two in the same division. Their scores were so impressive that they would have been ranked #1 and #3 in the older U18 division.
"One of [Elliott's] main competitors who could beat him lives down the hallway from him, which pushes both of them to a higher high," said their father, Matthew Gordon. In the event that they see a low point, they can build each other up. I know his brother had a great hand in contributing to his success in these events and pushing himself."
As the top rank in his division, Elliott advanced to the final round, where he secured the championship title. The tournament progressed, and the field was narrowed further to the top 16 for a double-elimination bracket. Elliott's victory earned him a spot on the Developmental Team for Junior Team USA, representing the United States in international bowling competitions.
"I am very happy for my brother winning the championship," said Miles. I've always known that he was capable of winning it all! It inspires me to win next year because I know he won't let me live it down until I do!"
Elliott and Miles Gordon's achievements highlight their dedication and talent and bring pride to the Columbus City Schools community. It showcases the exceptional capabilities of its students to dream big and achieve more during summer break and beyond.
