CCS School Nurse Participates in National Virtual Discussion on Preventing Youth Opioid Use
June 8, 2023 -- Dr. Kate King, President-Elect of the National Association of School Nurses and school nurse at World Language Middle School, recently shared her expertise as part of a national virtual discussion.
The discussion was presented by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and the U.S. Department of Education. King spoke as the president-elect of the National Association of School Nurses and provided the perspective of school nurses and how they are adapting.
“School nurses, with expertise in health education and community agencies, provide leadership in all phases of emergency planning for opioid-related use in schools and are essential to the team to providing a multi-focused plan to address education and prevention of opioid use and treatment in the school setting,” King said.
The discussion focused on preventing youth drug use and overdose, as well as examples from schools from across the country that have implemented life-saving measures for their students. The goal was to bring awareness to strategies and experiences focusing on prevention, education, and emergency response.
“Inclusion of the school nurse perspective on this panel and the recognition of the essential role of school nurses in preventing youth drug use and overdose highlights the commitment of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and the U.S. Department of Education to provide schools with strategies to protect the health of students,” King said. “This supports the vision of the National Association of School Nurses that all students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn.”
