National and District K-12 Health Education Standards
The National Health Education Standards (NHES) are written expectations of what students should know and be able to do in grades PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 to promote personal, family, and community health.

Venereal Disease Requirements
- You must receive an opt-in parent permission per the Ohio Revised Code, if you go outside the below requirements (items, a.-f.)

- Ohio Department of Education Audit: We were audited by the Ohio Department of Education this past September and will be audited annually between July 1-September 1.
- ***The month of May of each school year, you will be required to provide the following for your school to kschreiber1@columbus.k12.oh.us and the PE/Health department will contact everyone with an email reminder on May 1st of each year.
- Number of students that were excused from your sexual education instruction.
- Sample documentation of the opt-in form that you used.
- Title and copyright of curriculum that was used.
Ohio Department of Education Requirements
Instruction in venereal disease education pursuant to division (A)(5)(c) of section 3313.60 of the Revised Code shall emphasize that abstinence from sexual activity is the only protection that is one hundred percent effective against unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, and the sexual transmission of a virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
(a) Stress that students should abstain from sexual activity until after marriage;
(b) Teach the potential physical, psychological, emotional, and social side effects of participating in sexual activity outside of marriage;
(c) Teach that conceiving children out of wedlock is likely to have harmful consequences for the child, the child's parents, and society;
(d) Stress that sexually transmitted diseases are serious possible hazards of sexual activity;
(e) Advise students of the laws pertaining to financial responsibility of parents to children born in and out of wedlock;
(f) Advise students of the circumstances under which it is criminal to have sexual contact with a person under the age of sixteen pursuant to section 2907.04 of the Revised Code;
(g) Emphasize adoption as an option for unintended pregnancies.
(2) If a school district or school chooses to offer additional instruction in venereal disease or sexual education not specified in division (C)(1) of this section, the district or school shall notify all parents or guardians of that instruction, including the name of any instructor, vendor name, if applicable, and the name of the curriculum being used. No district or school shall offer that instruction to a student unless that student's parent or guardian has submitted written permission for that student to receive that instruction. Division (E) of this section does not apply to division (C)(2) of this section.
(3) Upon request, a school district or school shall provide any materials associated with the instruction offered under divisions (C)(1) and (2) of this section to a parent or guardian.
(D) The state board of education shall not adopt a separate model education program for health education.
(E) The department shall conduct an annual audit of each city, local, and exempted village school district, at the start of each school year, relative to its compliance with the instruction requirements of this section and division (A)(5)(c) of section 3313.60 of the Revised Code. The department shall publish the findings of each audit not later than one hundred twenty days after the start of the school year. The department shall include in the findings of each audit the name of any organization or program that provided materials to a school district regarding venereal disease instruction. The department's findings shall be prominently posted on its web site.
(F) The superintendent of public instruction shall not approve, pursuant to section 3302.07 of the Revised Code, any waiver of any requirement of this section.

EVERFI has partnered with Columbus City Schools to provide no-cost digital learning resources for CCS teachers to use with their students. These resources have been paid for by sponsor partners so that you are able to use them at absolutely no cost to you!
These resources are fully web-based and student-led. Students go through the online lessons at their own pace and teachers can have them use as much or as little of the lessons and they choose. Each program has pre and post-assessments for teachers to track student progress, as well as optional supplemental offline lesson plans for learning extension.

"Organ and Tissue" ORC Requirements
The Ohio Revised Code (ORC) 3313.60 states the the board of each cooperative education school district shall prescribe a curriculum for all schools under its control for health education. The health education curriculum must include the process of making an anatomical gift under Chapter 2108 of the Revised Code, with an emphasis on the life-saving and life-enhancing effects of organ and tissue donation. Health educations can use the below curriculums to fullfills this new ORC requirement.
CPR and AED Requirements
All Columbus City High Schools will receive training to meet this below requirement by the American Heart Assocation (AMA) at the September 22, 2017 professional development session. In collaboration with the AMA one classroom set of CPR/AED kits have been delivered to all high schools to implement this new requirement.
Sec. 3313.6021.
(A) As used in this section, "psychomotor skills" means the use of hands-on practice to support cognitive learning.
(B) Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year , except as provided in division (E) of this section, each school operated by a school district which offers grades nine to twelve shall provide instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator. Instruction shall include the psychomotor skills necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use an automated external defibrillator and shall be either of the following:(1) An instructional program developed by the American heart association or the American red cross that includes instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator;
(2) An instructional program that is nationally recognized and based on the most current national, evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator.
(C) No student shall receive certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator unless the student is trained by an authorized or certified instructor.
(D) Nothing in this section requires a licensed educator to be certified to provide training in the manner prescribed by this section to facilitate, provide, or oversee instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator that does not result in certification of students.
(E) If a student is excused from taking instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation under division (A)(8) of section 3313.60 of the Revised Code or if the student is a child with a disability and is incapable of performing the psychomotor skills required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and to use an automated external defibrillator, as indicated in the student's IEP , the student shall not be required to receive instruction as prescribed by this section. As used in this section, "child with a disability" and "IEP" have the same meanings as in section 3323.01 of the Revised Code.
