Resolutions for Expulsion Hearings
-
Following an Expulsion hearing with our office, your student will be assigned one of the following outcomes:
-
Expulsion
Any student that is expelled will be unable to re-enroll in any other CCS school while serving their expulsion.
A detailed letter will be sent by email to the Student and their Parent/Guardian.
This letter will include the type of discipline your student will be assigned, the start date, the end date and whether or not your student will be transferred to another school in the CCS District.
Contact Information for Expulsion
Email: hearingoffice@columbus.k12.oh.us
Phone: (614) 365-5640
IMPORTANT NOTE: Most public school districts honor the expulsion of Columbus City Schools. CCS will also honor any expulsion issued by other districts. -
Home Instruction (for students with an IEP)
Students who are assigned Home Instruction will be assigned a teacher from the Home Instruction Office.
A detailed letter will be sent by email to the Student and their Parent/Guardian.
This letter will include the type of discipline your student will be assigned, the start date, the end date and whether or not your student will be transferred to another school in the District.

Abeyance
An Abeyance is a decision the Hearing Office may make to place a temporary hold on the assigned discipline (i.e. expulsion). This gives the student an immediate second chance to return to school and make better choices.
If the student returns to the Hearing Office for any reason during the assigned abeyance period, the student will be required to serve the originally assigned discipline (i.e. expulsion) immediately without a chance for another hearing.
A detailed letter will be sent by email to the Student and their Parent/Guardian.
This letter will include the type of discipline your student will be assigned, the start date, the end date and whether or not your student will be transferred to another school in the District.

Email: hearingoffice@columbus.k12.oh.us
Phone: (614) 365-5640

Hearing Office Extended Suspension
An Extended Suspension follows the same rules as Suspensions issued at the school level.
Students may receive all homework while serving their suspension. This homework will come directly from their current teachers.
A detailed letter will be sent by email to the Student and their Parent/Guardian.
This letter will include the type of discipline your student will be assigned, the start date, the end date and whether or not your student will be transferred to another school in the District.
If you have any questions about getting homework for an Extended Suspension, please contact your student(s)’ school directly.
-
The Support Center
Students who are assigned to The Support Center at Columbus Online Academy attend classes online and must have a working device and internet services to participate. Students will be required to participate in a Zoom orientation with their Parent/Guardian before beginning the program.
An assignment to The Support Center is the District’s attempt to provide students a second chance to participate in school and not receive an Expulsion on their school record.
A detailed letter will be sent by email to the Student and their Parent/Guardian.
This letter will include the type of discipline your student will be assigned, the start date, the end date and whether or not your student will be transferred to another school in the District.

No Action Taken
The No Action Taken resolution is assigned if the Hearing Officer determines that the discipline issued to the student from the school was sufficient and appropriate, and no more disciplinary action should be assigned for the behavioral incident.
-
Discipline Transfers
If your student was transferred as a result of a discipline hearing, their new school will be assigned by Central Enrollment. Central Enrollment will enroll them in their new school based on available seats and other factors for each grade level.
Please check your Parent Portal to learn the new school assignment for your student.
Please note that any student who is transferred to another school as a result of a discipline hearing is not eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics for one calendar year from the last date of expulsion or their alternative discipline placement.

Interdistrict Open Enrollment
Interdistrict Open Enrollment (IOE) is for K-12 students who live outside of the Columbus City Schools (CCS) boundaries but wish to attend a CCS school.
Please note that if a student attending CCS due to IOE is referred to the Hearing Office, their enrollment with CCS will be end-dated immediately following the hearing.
