Summer Experience Frequently Asked Questions

When is the 2023 Summer Experience?
This year’s Summer Experience will take place over four weeks, June 20 through July 14, for Pre-K through 8 students, and six weeks for high school students - June 20 - July 28.
Elementary and middle school students will attend sites Monday through Friday (8 a.m to 1 p.m.) each week, and high school Summer Experience will be held Monday through Thursday (hours vary by building).

When are the registration dates for this year’s Summer Experience?
Summer Experience registrations opens March 15, and Pre-K through 8 families should register by May 19; registration for high school students is open through June 6.

How do I register my student for Summer Experience?
Applications for the 2023 Summer Experience can be found and submitted in the Parent Portal.

Will my Summer Experience site remain the same for the entire four-week program?
Yes. Once you’ve selected your Summer Experience site, it will remain the same for the entire summer program and it cannot be changed.

Is Summer Experience only open to current Columbus City Schools students?
Summer Experience is open to students enrolled in CCS for the current school year. However, students not enrolled in CCS will have the opportunity to enroll and register starting May 15, 2023.

When registering in Parent Portal, do I register my student based on their current grade or the grade they will enter in the 2023-2024 school year?
The student should be registered based on their (current) grade for the 2022-2023 school year.

Will Extended Day be offered for students?
Yes. Extended Day will be offered for students in grades kindergarten through fourth for all elementary Summer Experience sites; however, space is limited.
Extended Day will be offered Monday - Friday from 1 - 5 p.m.

Will transportation be provided for Summer Experience?
Yes. CCS will provide free transportation to elementary and middle Summer Experience school sites, partner sites, and mini-camp destinations. Transportation will be provided regionally based on your student’s Summer Experience site, and families will be prompted to select a designated pick-up and drop-off location when registering in Parent Portal.
Please Note: Only PreK students receiving special education services will be provided transportation during Summer Experience.
High school transportation will only be provided for students attending Spruce Run.

Can I change my pick-up and drop-off location after Summer Experience starts?
No, transportation is determined at registration and cannot be changed.

Who do I contact if I have transportation-related questions?
Please call the Transportation Call Center at 614-365-5074 between 7 a.m - 4 p.m. on weekdays.

Will meals be provided?
Yes. Free daily meals (breakfast and lunch) will be provided to all students.

Will students take part in the same activities at every Summer Experience site?
No. Summer Experience delivers four weeks of hands-on enrichment, and the themes and activities will vary based on the school site.

Can students participate in Summer Experience virtually?
The 2023 Summer Experience will be hosted in-person at school and partner sites. Virtual APEX courses will ONLY be available to high school students. High schoolers will be able to participate in virtual credit recovery or credit advancement programs.

Can my students make up previously failed coursework during Summer Experience?
Only high school students will have the opportunity to enroll in credit recovery. Students can enroll at an in-person site or virtually through Apex.

Will End-of-Course testing be offered this summer?
Yes. End-of-Course Ohio State Testing (OST) will be offered for high school students. Students must pre-register by June 22: HS Summer Testing Registration.

Will students need Chromebooks or other devices during Summer Experience?
No. School sites will provide devices and all other supplies such as pens, paper, pencils, etc.
